C. S. Lewis wrote, ‘Faith is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted, in spite of your changing moods.’ (‘Mere Christianity’)
Faith is a unifying force. Not only does it unite people of different backgrounds and temperaments (the church is a wonderfully diverse place which is held together by common beliefs and the power of God’s love), it makes us as individuals whole. Colossians 1:17 says that in Christ ‘all things hold together.’ I believe this includes people!
Moods are funny things. One day we can feel positive, hopeful and full of faith; the next day we can feel gloomy, pessimistic, irritable, downcast. External circumstances may determine our moods at times, but sometimes we struggle to explain or understand how we feel.
C. S. Lewis’s observation about holding on to faith, no matter what our moods, is very relevant. Rend Collective remind us that our feelings, though useful, are not gospel. (‘True In The Light’) God, and the truth He brings into our lives, has to be applied to our moods by faith.
Today, we put our trust in God to hold all things together in Christ and to keep us heading towards the light with Him
