Dave spoke last Sunday evening about the grace of God, reminding us that David’s behaviour to Mephibosheth (son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul) is a living example of grace in action. The story in 2 Sam 9:1-12 shows us how David, now king, wants to show kindness to Jonathan’s family because of the friendship he and Jonathan once shared. Mephibosheth, when summoned before the king, probably expected to lose his life, but was instead greeted kindly and offered great blessings. In the same way, God is the One who is seeking to save the lost (see Luke 19:10) and who offers great blessings to us all. Jesus seeks out those who are lost (think of Zaccheaus and Saul, for example).

Mephibosheth, because of his birth, deserves judgement and death. Yet he receives forgiveness and kindness. Then David restores to him all of that to which he was once entitled. When God saves us, He also restores to us everything that Adam lost, and even more. When God saves us by His grace, we are invited to His table where we will sit with Him for evermore. We have a place at the top table above all top tables. We are there with God’s own Son, Jesus Christ, and we are treated the same as He is.

Grace is undeserved and unearned. It doesn’t mean life will be trouble-free (Mephibosheth was later falsely accused of plotting against David, but he survived this trial), but it does mean we can rest secure in God’s love and favour. Eph 2:4-8 reminds us that we are saved by grace through faith and we will continue to live and flourish because of the grace of God towards us. It’s all of grace.
