Yesterday we continued our study of Isaiah, looking at Isaiah 2:1-22. Isaiah speaks of the preeminence of Israel, a future time when peace will reign and wars will be over. The situation looked very different at the time, with sin separating God’s people from God; the land was full of superstition, full of idols, full of silver and gold, but not full of worship or honouring God. Isaiah, like many prophets, spoke of judgment to come, judgment because they trusted Egypt (a symbol of the world) rather than God.
The ultimate end God has for His people is good – peace through the world. We do not see this yet, but even in the middle of tumult, we can have personal peace as we trust in God. Jesus said, ‘In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.’ (John 16:33) We may still be waiting for the peace Isaiah spoke about, but we know in God’s time, it will come.
